1. Zebra mussels aggregate to form dense colonies where, depending on the flow rate, individuals in different vertical locations within the colony may experience restricted food availability. 2. Using 32P‐labelled Chlamydomonas angulosa, we found ingestion rates of individual mussels located at the surface to exceed those in the bottom of a 6 cm thick colony by up to 75%. 3. Higher velocities (10 and 20 cm s?1) increased algal delivery to the colony's middle layer (2–4 cm depth), subsequently increasing ingestion rates to equal those in the surface layer, while increasing ingestion only for the smallest mussels in the bottom (4–6 cm). 4. Obesity and low levels of physical and metabolic fitness are risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The purpose of this investigation was to attenuate obesity and improve physical and metabolic fitness in elementary school children. Schools have the opportunity, mechanisms, and personnel in place to deliver nutrition education, fitness activities, and a school food service that is nutritious and healthy. Cohorts from grades 3 to 5 in two school districts in rural Nebraska (Intervention/Control) participated in a 2-year study of physical activity and modified school lunch program. Data collection for aerobic capacity, body composition, blood chemistry, nutrition knowledge, energy intake, and physical activity was at the beginning and end of each year. Int received enhanced physical activity, grade specific nutrition education, and a lower fat and sodium school lunch program. Con continued with a regular school lunch and team sports activity program. At year 2, Int lunches had significantly less energy (9%), fat (25%), sodium (21%), and more fiber (17%). However, measures of 24-hour energy intake for Int and Con showed significant differences for sodium only. Physical activity in the classroom was 6% greater for Int compared to Con (p < 0.05) but physical activity outside of school was ?16 % less for Int compared to Con (p < 0.05). Body weight and body fat were not different between schools for normal weight or obese children. No differences were found for cholesterol, insulin, and glucose; however, HDL cholesterol was significantly greater and cholesterol/HDL was significantly less for Int compared to Con (p < 0.05). It appears that compensation in both energy intake and physical activity outside of school may be responsible for the lack of differences between Int and Con. 相似文献

The synthesis of four β-lactam antibiotics (penicillin G, pivaloyloxymethyl ester of penicillin G, ampicillin and pivampicillin) catalyzed byEscherichia coli penicillin acylase has been investigated in water-methanol mixtures. The enzyme reactions were either thermodynamically or kinetically controlled at the same conditions using phenylacetic acid andd--phenylglycine methyl ester as acyl donors and 6-aminopenicillanic acid and pivaloyloxymethyl 6-aminopenicillanic acid as acyl acceptors. It has been found that the influences of the cosolvent content on the reaction rates and synthetic yields are significantly different depending on the substrates used in the experiments. On the other hand, within certain ranges of the methanol content (up to ca. 40% (v/v) the residual activities of the enzymes in water-methanol mixtures were only slightly lower than those in aqueous media. To analyze the factors that determine the reaction rate in water-cosolvent mixtures, the effect of methanol on the apparent pK values of the substrates has been investigated, and a mathematical model has been developed on the basis of the assumption that the enzyme binds non-ionized substrates. Model simulation results indicate that the solvent effect on reaction rates is mainly attributed to the kinetic effects of changes in apparent pK values. 相似文献

Light-saturated photosynthesis (Pmax) of Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) Hay et Mohler is known to be carbonlimited at natural concentrations of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). In the present study, light-limited and light-saturated photosynthetic rates of E. huxleyi were studied at three concentrations of DIC (2.4, 7.4, and 12.4 mM) for high-calcite (Cin/Ctot=0.48) and low-calcite (Cin/Ctot=0.08) cells of the same strain. The photosynthetic efficiency (α) and the maximum quantum yield (θmax)A increased by more than a factor of 2 from the lowest to the highest DIC level. Pmax a, and θmax were always higher for the high-calcite than for the low-calcite cells at identical DIC levels. This may indicate that the calcifcation process acts as an extra supplier of CO2 for photosynthesis making the CO2 shortage at natural DIC levels a little smaller for high-calcite than for low-calcite E. huxleyi. A dependency of θmax on DIC has not previously been shown for marine phytoplankton. θmax is a key parameter in recent biooptical models of phytoplankton productivity, and the results from the present study are therefore important for modeling the productivity of E. huxleyi. 相似文献

Eight diatom species (Chaetoceros pseudocurvisetus Mang ., Stephanodiscus hantzschii Grun ., Skeletonema costatum ( Grev.) Cleve , Asterionella formosa Hass ., Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii Cleve , Detonula confervacea ( Cleve) Gran , Chaetoceros sp., and Nitzschia frigida Grun.) were isolated from various temperature environments ranging from temperate to the Arctic, and their growth responses to temperature were determined. Each species grew over a different temperature range. The lower and upper limits of each species varied from −1.8° to 20° C and from 2° to 30° C, respectively. The width of the growth range of each species. also varied from 3.8° to 25° C, and the growth of these species was observed, as a whole, between a wide temperature range from −1.8° to 30° C .
Within the growth temperature ranges, the growth rate of each species increased with temperature until reaching a maximum, which was followed by a steep decrease up to the upper limit of the growth range. As a result, each species showed a maximum rate at the temperature very near to the upper limit, which was generally higher than the isolation temperature. The specific growth rates were compared among the eight species. The interspecific maximum rate at each temperature exhibited an exponential increase with a Q10 = 1.48. The relative growth rates of each species were calculated by normalizing the specific growth rates with the interspecific maximum rate at each respective temperature. Semicontinuously grown wild carrot ( Daucus carota L.) cells were used in an investigation of the effect of culture medium pH on ammonium uptake in suspension cultures as a first step in exploring the relationship between pH and anthocyanin biosynthesis. In contrast to published data showing decreasing uptake rates with decreasing culture medium pH, ammonium-limited, semicontinuous carrot cell cultures showed a 25% greater ammonium uptake rate at pH 4.5 than at pH 5.5. When cells that had been grown semicontinuously in medium with a pH of 4.5 or 5.5 were grown in batch cultures at pH 4.5, 5.5 or 6.5 the ammonium uptake rates were those of the semicontinuous cultures, indicating that the pH of the batch culture medium had no effect on ammonium uptake rates over 7 days. The cell culture was composed of very small aggregates when it was grown semicontinuously in medium at pH 4.5, but was composed of large aggregates when it was grown semicontinuously in medium at pH 5.5. The aggregation/disaggregation of the cells was pH dependent, as changing the pH of the semicontinuous culture medium altered the extent of the aggregation. Six honey bee colonies hived in Langstroth nuclei were each artificially infested with 100 phoretic Varroa mites. Hive debris on bottom inserts was inspected every 3–4 days. The adult Varroa mites were compared with mounted specimens and catalogued into lightly pigmented and darkly pigmented females. After 4 months, an acaricide treatment was used to estimate the final mite population. Based on light and dark adult counts, we propose a balancing equation that follows the Varroa population increase at 7 day intervals and allows the calculation of experimental population growth rates. The calculated Varroa finite rate of increase is =1.021. Exponential and logistic growth models fitted to the balancing equation data gave R

We fed prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) rat chow diluted with variable amounts of -cellulose to determine 1) how much fiber the voles could tolerate in their diet; 2) changes in food intake and digestibility of dry matter and of fiber; 3) the extent to which voles utilized fiber as an energy source; and 4) whether any of these variables differed between groups of animals maintained at 5 or 22°C. Fiber content of the diets ranged from 20 to 84%. Animals held at 5°C maintained body mass through a diet containing 69% fiber, while animals held at 22°C maintained body mass through the 84% fiber diet. Dry matter intake increased with fiber level from 9.3 to 15.0 g·day-1 for animals at 5°C and from 5.6 to 14.0 g·day-1 for animals at 22°C; intake on the highest fiber diet eaten by either group was not different. Dry matter digestibility decreased significantly as the fiber in the diets increased, but was not affected by temperature treatments. Digestible dry matter intake for each group remained constant regardless of diet quality, but on each diet digestible dry matter intake for animals at 5°C was significantly higher than that of the animals held at 22°C. Digestibility of the fiber portion of the experimental diets remained constant as food quality decreased, so the percent of daily energy need met by fiber utilization increased with higher food intake. On the lowest quality diet each group tolerated, fiber digestion provided approximately 42 and 68% of the energy needs of voles at 5 and 22°C, respectively.Abbreviations BM

We have investigated the seasonal changes in food intake, body weight, gonadal volume and plasma concentrations of thyroxine,
luteinizing hormone and testosterone in male blackheaded bunting (Emberiza melanocephala) in captivity under natural daylengths at 29° N. The cycles in food intake, body weight and testis size in buntings appeared
to be phase related. While the changes in body weight and testicular size were parallel to each other and correspond to the
increasing daylengths of spring and early summer, cycle in food intake was almost antiphase to the cycles in body weight and
testicular growth and development. Furthermore, buntings showed a distinct seasonal cycle in plasma concentrations of thyroxine,
luteinizing hormone and testosterone. It is suggested that these seasonal cycles in buntings are endogenously programmed and
their entrainment to the environmental photoperiod ensures the occurrence of different physiological functions at temporally
